Aerospace - 406 ELT BeaconEmergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) have been standard aircraft equipment for many decades and predate satellite tracking. Early versions of ELTs operated at a frequency of 121.5 MHz and later 243 MHz. However, when much electronic equipment started operating at the same frequency, false alerts went up significantly. As a result, a new ELT technology emerged using digital signals operating at a frequency of 406 MHz.
